Silicon Valley, the home to Google, Twitter, Facebook, and countless other startups, is the focus of attention from around the world. People from near and far want to get involved with the exciting opportunities that abound here. Yet a significant barrier that they encounter is Silicon Valley’s mind-numbing jargon, that seems impenetrable at best, and at worst downright ridiculous.

However, learning the Silicon Valley jargon is imperative for anyone who wants to understand or get involved with the Valley’s business scene – either launching their own startup or doing business with the area’s existing firms. And don’t even think about trying to get venture capital funding if you can’t talk the lingo!

Valley Speak: Deciphering the Jargon of Silicon Valley (May 2016) by authors Rochelle Kopp and Steven Ganz explains the top 600 words and phrases that will help anyone navigate the Silicon Valley ecosystem like a pro.

“We want this book to be the definitive guide to the unique vocabulary used in the Bay Area startup scene, helping everyone from people who want to do business here to those who just want to watch HBO’s Silicon Valley without being confused,” says co-author Rochelle Kopp.

Valley Speak covers the jargon of key areas of business including: startup funding, innovation, product development, consequential technology trends, marketing, and human resources. In addition to the in-depth definitions and explanations offered by the book, each word is also illuminated further with quotes from prominent Silicon Valley personalities, ranging from Marc Andreessen to Mark Zuckerberg. “This book is not just a dictionary, we also provide context of where terminology came from, how it’s used, and why people care,” says co-author Steven Ganz.

Well-organized, easy to read and with touches of humor and insight, Valley Speak will help all readers get on board the fast-moving train that is Silicon Valley.
